What Should You Do Immediately After a Tooth Gets Knocked Out?
When a tooth is knocked out, sometimes called dental trauma or avulsion, every minute counts. Here’s what to do first:
- Find the tooth: Locate it as quickly as possible, and always pick it up by the crown, which is the white chewing surface, never by the root.
- Rinse it gently: If the tooth is dirty, rinse it briefly with plain water. Don’t scrub it, use soap, or dry it off with a towel, since this can damage the root surface.
- Try to reinsert it: If possible, gently place the tooth back into its socket, facing the correct direction, and have the person bite down softly on a clean cloth to hold it in place.
- Keep it moist if reinsertion isn’t possible: If putting it back isn’t an option, place the tooth in a container of milk, or have the person hold it inside their cheek. Avoid storing it in plain tap water, since this can damage the root cells.
- Get to a dentist immediately: Time is critical here. The best outcomes happen when a knocked out tooth is treated within 30 to 60 minutes.
Why Acting Fast Matters So Much
The root of a tooth is covered with delicate living cells that need to stay moist and undamaged for reattachment to succeed. Once those cells dry out or die, the odds of saving the tooth drop significantly. This is exactly why an emergency dentist will always tell you not to wait, even if the injury doesn’t seem that serious at first glance.
What to Do If You Can’t Reach a Dentist Right Away
Not every situation allows for an immediate dental visit, especially if the injury happens at night, on a weekend, or somewhere far from your usual dentist. In these cases:
- Keep the tooth moist in milk, saliva, or a tooth preservation product if you have one
- Avoid letting the tooth dry out at any point, even briefly
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth to help with swelling
- Call an emergency dental line as soon as you can, even if you have to wait a bit to be seen
- Head to an urgent care or emergency room if there’s significant bleeding or other injuries involved
Can a Knocked Out Tooth Always Be Saved?
Not always, and that’s an honest reality worth knowing. Success depends on several things, including how quickly the tooth was handled, how it was stored, and how long it was out of the mouth. Baby teeth are actually treated differently than adult teeth in these situations, since a knocked out baby tooth is typically not reinserted, in order to avoid damaging the developing permanent tooth underneath. If reattachment isn’t possible for whatever reason, there are still solid replacement options available, so it’s never the end of the road for your smile. Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can a knocked out adult tooth be saved?
Yes, in many cases an adult tooth can be saved if it’s handled properly and treated by a dentist as quickly as possible. The best chance of successful reattachment is usually within 30 to 60 minutes after the injury.
2. What is the best way to transport a knocked out tooth?
If you can’t place the tooth back into its socket, keep it moist by storing it in milk, saliva, or a tooth preservation solution. Avoid wrapping it in tissue or letting it dry out.
3. What happens during an emergency dental visit for a knocked out tooth?
Your dentist will examine the injured area, clean the tooth and socket if needed, reposition the tooth if possible, and secure it with a splint. Follow-up visits may be required to monitor healing and determine whether additional treatment, such as a root canal, is necessary.
