Your Dental Questions, Answered
We know that having the right information makes all the difference when it comes to your dental health. Below you will find answers to the questions our Punta Gorda patients ask most often, covering everything from dental anxiety and emergencies to cosmetic treatments and payment options. If your question is not listed here, do not hesitate to reach out. Our team is always glad to help.
General Dental Questions
For most patients, we recommend a dental checkup and professional cleaning every six months. However, some patients with gum disease, a history of cavities, or other ongoing concerns may benefit from more frequent visits. At your appointment, our team will recommend a schedule that is right for your specific oral health needs.
You are not alone, and we are not here to judge. Many patients come to us after years away from the dentist, and we treat every patient with the same warmth and respect regardless of how long it has been. The most important thing is that you are here now. We will start with a thorough exam and X-rays to assess where things stand and build a care plan from there.
The right toothbrush depends on your individual smile. Most dentists recommend a soft-bristled brush to protect your gums and enamel, but technique matters just as much as the brush itself. Some patients are unknowingly damaging their gums with incorrect brushing habits. Our team is happy to give you personalized guidance at your next visit.
Yes. Chronic bad breath, also called halitosis, is often linked to gum disease, bacterial buildup, or other underlying oral health conditions. A professional cleaning and a full exam can get to the root of the problem. Treating the cause rather than masking it with mouthwash or mints is the only lasting solution.
Dental Anxiety and Sedation
Dental anxiety is extremely common and nothing to be embarrassed about. At Smiles of Punta Gorda, we take your comfort seriously. We offer oral conscious sedation, which puts you in a deeply relaxed state during treatment. Most patients who use sedation report little to no memory of their appointment afterward. Combined with our gentle chairside manner and patient-first approach, we make it possible for even the most anxious patients to get the care they need.
Oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed oral medication before your appointment that helps you relax deeply throughout your treatment. You remain conscious and able to respond, but you will feel calm and at ease. You will need someone to drive you home afterward. It is a safe, effective option that works particularly well for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety or those undergoing longer procedures.
Dental Emergencies in Punta Gorda
A dental emergency is any situation involving severe tooth pain, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a lost filling or crown, a swollen jaw, or an abscess. These situations require prompt attention to prevent further damage or serious complications. If you are unsure whether your situation qualifies, call our office, and we will help you determine the best course of action.
Call our office right away. We do our best to see emergency patients the same day, and in most cases we can get you in within 24 hours. While you wait, avoid chewing on the affected side, rinse gently with warm salt water if there is swelling, and take over-the-counter pain relief if needed. Do not put off calling. Dental emergencies rarely resolve on their own and can worsen quickly without treatment.
Cosmetic Dentistry Questions
Cosmetic dentistry addresses a wide range of aesthetic concerns, including staining, chips, cracks, gaps, misalignment, and uneven gum lines. At Smiles of Punta Gorda, we offer dental veneers, professional teeth whitening, Invisalign, tooth bonding, and smile makeovers. During a consultation, we will help you understand which treatments would give you the results you are looking for.
Professional teeth whitening is significantly more effective than over-the-counter products. Store-bought strips and gels use lower concentrations of whitening agents and often produce uneven results. Our professional take-home whitening system uses custom-fitted trays and a prescription-strength whitening gel to deliver consistent, noticeable results in a safer and more controlled way.
Yes. We offer Invisalign, a clear aligner system that straightens teeth without brackets or wires. Invisalign aligners are removable, virtually invisible, and generally more comfortable than traditional braces. Treatment typically takes around 12 months, though this varies depending on the complexity of the case. We will let you know at your consultation whether Invisalign is the right fit for your smile goals.
Restorative Dentistry and Dental Implants
Yes. Dr. Martin places and restores dental implants entirely in-house, from the initial implant placement through the final crown, bridge, or implant-supported denture. This means you deal with one office, one care team, and one billing department throughout the entire process. Dental implants are the most durable and natural-feeling tooth replacement option available and can last a lifetime with proper care.
Absolutely. Dentures restore your ability to chew, speak clearly, and smile with confidence. They can replace some or all of your missing teeth and are designed to fit comfortably in your mouth. Dentures supported by dental implants offer even greater stability and function. We offer free denture consultations so you can explore your options without any commitment.
Yes. We provide tooth extractions, including wisdom teeth removal, bone grafting, and ridge augmentation to prepare patients for dental implants. All oral surgery procedures are performed by our experienced doctors at our Punta Gorda office.
TMJ and Jaw Pain
Yes. Jaw pain, facial discomfort, headaches, and difficulty opening or closing your mouth may be symptoms of TMJ disorder. TMJ issues are often related to teeth grinding, clenching, or bite problems. We provide customized nightguards and other TMJ treatments to relieve pain, protect your teeth, and restore normal jaw function.
Teeth grinding, also called bruxism, is often caused by stress, anxiety, sleep disorders, or bite misalignment. Many patients grind their teeth at night without realizing it. Left untreated, it can cause significant wear on the teeth, jaw pain, and headaches. A custom nightguard made from impressions of your teeth is the most effective way to protect your smile and reduce symptoms.
Insurance and Payment Questions
Yes, we work with a variety of dental insurance plans. Please contact our office to confirm whether we accept your specific plan and to get help understanding your benefits before your appointment.
We offer financing through CareCredit and Cherry, both of which allow you to spread the cost of treatment over time with manageable monthly payments. Applications are quick, and approvals are often instant. Our front office team is happy to walk you through the process.
We welcome patients without insurance and will work with you to find a payment approach that fits your situation. Financing through CareCredit or Cherry is a great option for covering larger treatment costs without paying everything upfront.
