Invisalign has become a top choice for those wanting to straighten their teeth discreetly, offering a modern and comfortable alternative to traditional metal braces. Using custom-made, clear aligners, Invisalign gradually shifts your teeth into place without the hassle of metal wires.
The best part? You can remove them, meaning no food restrictions and easy maintenance of your oral hygiene. According to Invisalign®, over 19 million people including more than 5 million teens have used Invisalign clear aligners to perfect their smiles, it’s clear why it’s a top choice.
But to make sure you get the best results, here are 6 tips to help you stay on track during your Invisalign journey!
6 Effective Tips for Invisalign Treatment Success
1. Wear Your Aligners for 22 Hours a Day
One of the most important aspects of Invisalign treatment is consistency. To achieve the best results, you must wear your aligners for at least 22 hours each day. This means removing them only when eating, drinking (other than water), brushing, or flossing your teeth.
While it might be tempting to take them out more often for special occasions or meals, doing so can prolong your treatment time.
Tip: To stay on track, set phone reminders to help you remember to put your aligners back in after meals or drinks.
2. Always Carry a Case with You
It’s easy to forget where you put your aligners after removing them for meals or drinks.
Unfortunately, many people end up misplacing or damaging their aligners by leaving them out in unsafe places. Always carry a case with you to keep your aligners safe and clean when not in use.
Tip: Keep extra cases in places you frequent, such as your car, desk, or bag. This ensures you’re never caught without a safe place to store your aligners.
3. Protect Your Aligners From Staining
One of the greatest benefits of Invisalign is its discreet appearance. To maintain that clear, subtle look, you’ll want to avoid staining your aligners.
Beverages like coffee, tea, wine, and soda can stain your aligners and make them more noticeable. Stick to drinking water while wearing them, and if you do enjoy staining beverages, remove your aligners beforehand.
Tip: After drinking something that could stain your aligners, rinse them with water and clean them thoroughly before putting them back in.
4. Clean Your Aligners Regularly and Gently
Proper cleaning is essential to maintaining the clarity and hygiene of your aligners. Avoid using abrasive toothpaste, which can scratch the surface of the aligners and make them more prone to staining.
Instead, clean them with a mild antibacterial soap or a cleaner specifically designed for Invisalign. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to scrub the aligners gently.
Tip: Clean your aligners at least twice a day to prevent any bacteria buildup. You can also rinse them with lukewarm water when you take them out to remove any food particles.
5. Don’t Discard Your Old Aligners Too Quickly
As you progress in your Invisalign treatment, you’ll move from one set of aligners to the next. While it’s tempting to toss out your old aligners, it’s a good idea to keep them as a backup.
If you lose or misplace your new aligners, having the previous set can help prevent treatment delays and keep your progress on track.
Tip: Store your old aligners in a safe spot where you can easily access them if needed. Just make sure you’re staying on track with your new set.
6. Minimize Discomfort with Smart Timing
While Invisalign is generally more comfortable than traditional braces, you may experience some discomfort when switching to a new set of aligners.
The best way to minimize discomfort is by inserting your new aligners right before bed. This way, you’ll likely sleep through the adjustment period, and by the time you wake up, the discomfort will be less noticeable.
Tip: If the discomfort persists, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help ease any discomfort. If you experience significant pain, consult your dentist for advice.
Final Thoughts
Invisalign offers a discreet, effective, and comfortable way to achieve the smile you’ve always wanted. However, following these 6 tips is essential to ensure your treatment progresses smoothly and efficiently.
By consistently wearing your aligners, cleaning them properly, and taking care of them, you can stay on track to achieve a straight, healthy smile in less time than traditional braces.
